Geography

The State of Utah is located in the Rocky Mountain Region of the United States and is a land known for its snow-covered peaks, beautiful colored canyons, and vast rock formations. Three major land areas are found in the state, the Rocky Mountains, the Basin and Ridge Region and the Colorado Plateau.

Utah is surrounded by Idaho and Wyoming on its north side, and by Arizona on the south side. To the east is Colorado and on the west is Nevada. The entire state encompasses over 84,904 square miles, which makes it the 13th largest of the fifty states. In addition, Utah has the distinction of being one of the three highest states in the union with a mean elevation of 6,100 feet above sea level. Perhaps best known for its landlocked seawater body, the Great Salt Lake, the state is also home to two major rivers, the Colorado River and the Green River.

The diversity of Utah's geography makes it a great state to visit. The traveler can enjoy high mountain skiing, hiking in alpine mountains or red canyon lands, or shopping in one of the most progressive cities in the west, Salt Lake City.

The State of Utah provides something for everyone.
