The Timpanogos Cave National Monument is hidden in the alpine forests of the Wasatch Mountains. Known for its helictites, yellowish green rock, and mysterious passage ways, the Timpanogos Cave should not be missed. The entrance to the cave sits at 6,700 feet and can be accessed by a 1.5 mile paved trail starting at the visitor center.
The caves are filled with helictites and colorful rock. Helictites are formations that are spiral in shape, formed by water being pushed through small openings. It is thought that these formations exist because of the amount of fault movement that occurs in the caves. The faults have also created passages between larger caverns. Look closely at the rock walls, inside and out of the cave, for small marine animal fossils.
The caves are located within the Mount Timpanogos region of the Wasatch, the second tallest mountain in the entire range. Explore the trails around this mountain and make sure to travel through Timpanogos Cave's three caverns as well.
